Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke

This was a long (in terms of number of pages and the amount of time it took me to read) and broad (in terms of how many characters and how much action it encompasses) book which I would describe as a sort of light-hearted Harry Potter for adults (and yet I don't know why someone old enough to read Harry Potter wouldn't also be able to read this). I would recommend it to people who enjoy works of fancy.

  1. *Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell* was my favorite book of 2009! I just loved the redemptive ending too - which I hadn't really expected, not thinking the author to care about such things. I listened to it and read it (it is quite the chunkster). The narrator was fabulous. It reminded me more of Tolkien because of its depth of back-story and characters. But then, I'm not a Potter fan.

  2. It did have a great depth of back-story and characters. I was, in fact, amazed at just how much the author included gracefully in the story. I suppose the surface similarities of magic and a real-world England prompted the comparison with Potter. I do hope Ms. Clarke writes more.

  3. She has written another book. It's a short story collection which continues the theme of Fairie. I know I reviewed it (liked it), but I can't remember it's name. I heard she was working on another larger piece, but don't know if it has been published yet
