A Short Note about the Title

'Giggling Gull' is the name of the pet seagull of Burt Dow, Deep Water Man, in the book of the same name by Robert McCloskey. I decided to use it as the name of my blog because I thought it would help keep me from taking myself too seriously. My thoughts are nothing more than the giggles of a gull.

  2. Choosing to not take yourself too seriously is a good thing.
Early in our marriage, we began buying Robert McCloskey books from stores appropriate to the books' settings whenever we visited New England. For instance we bought Make Way for Ducklings in Boston on our honeymoon and Burt Dow in Camden, Maine a year or so later. We had the bookstores stamp the flyleaves for authenticity. Those copies are pretty worn now!

  3. I like your plan for buying books. If I ever make it East, I'll have to purchase some McCloskey books. I suppose I need to research what books I should buy in Phoenix, AZ. Any ideas?

  4. Roxaboxen is a gorgeous picture book that takes place in Yuma, Arizona. The author, Alice McLarran, writes of a summer in her mother's childhood when a group of neighborhood children created their own make believe town in the desert. The story is a celebration of childhood imagination that my children all loved.

  5. Thank you for the suggestion. I will look out for "Roxaboxen." We have a delightful used book store not far from here, which has an extensive collection of books about and set in AZ. Now you've given me a good reason to stop in there soon.
